Many childhood diseases are communicable and do not pose a public threat. They will be managed by the parents, principal, school nurse and teacher. Some communicable diseases are less common but more dangerous to the public and the following procedures will be used to address those situations.
Staff members will be responsible for reporting to the building principal and school nurse any diagnosed or suspected communicable disease within the school environment. Necessary precautions will be taken and appropriate efforts will be made to maintain confidentiality. Health records should only be available to those with a legitimate educational concern. School nurse or principal shall report communicable disease to local health officer or Outagamie County Public Health Service.
Principal, school nurse and superintendent will conference to review level of risk. The family will be consulted. An interim placement decision will be made. If the decision is made to isolate the student, an alternative educational program will be sought while the remainder of this procedure is followed. If the decision is to continue enrollment, necessary precautions will be taken.
Health information (deleting individual’s name) will be shared with medical consultant and/or legal counsel. Information from these resource people will be reviewed by the principal, nurse, and superintendent to determine whether the child maybe enrolled in a regular school program.
If the decision is to not enroll the child, alternative education will be arranged and a periodic review of the situation will be made by the principal. The child will be reinstated when appropriate.
If the decision is to enroll the child, staff members working with the child will be informed of the risks involved and the necessary precautions.
A staff member may ask for review of the decision to place the child in the regular program if there has been an oversight or if conditions change.
The Board of Education will be informed of the decision to enroll or not to enroll a child.
