The Reading/Language Arts Program is defined as follows:
Overall, the reading and language arts programming strives to provide equitable services, practices and resources to every learning based upon responsiveness to effective instruction and intervention. High-quality instruction and strategic use of data within a continuum of supports facilitate learner success.
Prior to entering kindergarten, students have an opportunity to attend a two-week summer school course, Getting Ready for 5K.
Kindergarten students will be screened with an early literacy assessment as outlined in the district Early Literacy Plan.
All children in grades K-3 will participate in science-based early literacy instruction in both universal and intervention settings. This instruction is systematic and explicit and consists of the following: phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, background knowledge, oral language development, vocabulary, writing, comprehension, and reading fluency. The district curriculum guides outline what is taught in each grade level.
Grades 4-8 will stress reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language as outlined in the district curriculum guides. Interventions and enrichments will be provided to meet each student's needs. Those students who are not able to meet the grade-level standards established by the district may be scheduled into applied literacy courses at the high school.
Students in grades 9-12 will stress reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language as outlined in the district curriculum guides. Students who are not able to meet the standards established by the district will be scheduled into a summer school course or have to repeat the course.
All disciplines will account for wide ranges in reading skills by providing for multi-texts with appropriate reading ranges All disciplines will encourage accurate writing skills by requiring appropriate writing assignments.
