Little Chute Area School District (LCASD) has been authorized by the Department of Public Instruction to offer the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (SBL), joining 33 districts statewide.

The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (SBL) is a state-approved student credential that recognizes graduating high school students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more additional languages. DPI defines proficiency benchmarks in listening, speaking, reading, and writing (or receptive and expressive skills for ASL).

Eligible students show bilingualism, biliteracy, and sociocultural competence in English and another language learned at home or through instruction.

Each recipient is recognized at Little Chute High School senior awards night and graduation ceremonies with certificates, a stole, and designation in the printed program booklet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy?

The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (SBL) is awarded to graduating high school students in school districts with a Department of Public Instruction-approved program, who have demonstrated advanced achievement in bilingualism, biliteracy, and sociocultural competence in two or more languages.


Is the Seal of Biliteracy just for English Learners?

No. The Seal is granted to any student who meets the criteria of demonstrating language proficiency on specific assessments and socio-cultural competence as it relates to English and a partner language.


What measures proficiency to obtain the certificate?

Students demonstrate proficiency in English using one of the following options:  ACCESS score of 4 or higher, ACT English Language Arts score of 18 or higher, or the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL). 

Students demonstrating proficiency in other languages using Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) testing. 
 
Students will create a portfolio to demonstrate their sociocultural competence that includes artifacts from four different events or service opportunities.


How does the Seal of Biliteracy help a student?

The seal of biliteracy is on a student’s transcript and universities may use the seal to recognize proficiency for admissions purposes with some institutions offering automatic college credit or it can support qualifications for scholarships.  It can also provide career advantages with increased competitiveness for jobs that value bilingual skills. Finally, it recognizes a student’s dedication to learning a second language and honors the value of multiple languages and cultures.
