The Roots of Flex
The concept of the Flex Academy began during the 2012-2013 school year by an experienced team of educators and instructional designers. By applying the power of technology, we are able to offer students of the Fox Cities an innovative alternative to a traditional public school education. As a fundamental part of its philosophy, the Flex Academy embraces technology in education. The curriculum meets or exceeds state and national standards and also meets INACOL standards in education.
Four teachers opened the Flex Academy doors in 2014-2015 with 50 students and about 15 families who were willing to pioneer a new type of educational frontier. To this day, nothing like the Flex Academy exists in the entire Midwest. The Little Chute Area School District planned on renting one room at the local Civic Center for the Flex Academy. Soon, the school required more space and daily spilled out into two more rooms. Each night the classrooms packed up and stored supplies back into the single room.
In the second and third years we added more students, teachers and thus required more space. At this time, the Flex could stay in the extra space Monday through Thursday. Thus, packing up only once per week. During the fourth year, and 75 students strong, the Little Chute Area School District began a referendum to include renovated space within the 5-12 complex to include the Flex Academy. This would give the Flex Academy designated space, classrooms and Maker spaces for multi-age learning opportunities.
The Flex Academy started the fifth year with 100 students in our forever home on September 13th, 2018, only one week after the construction was completed.
Our Current Story
In today’s Flex, we have four full-time teachers, one full-time Special Education/SEL teacher, and continue to have a full-time Administrative Assistant. We have 4 different gradebands, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, and 6-8. Each gradebands designated space is student-centered and offers flexible seating with intimate learning environments. Our space allows for flexibility, flow, and purposeful function.
We at the Flex Academy believe in the growth of the whole child, using a rigorous Personalized Curriculum, with a focus on Health and Wellness and Service Learning. Our outcome is not only to fulfill them intellectually, but also all areas of their development such as emotionally, socially, physically, environmentally, and spiritually. Creating a curriculum around these principles helps prepare our students to be ready for their future!
