Dear Families,

Welcome to 2nd grade! I hope that you enjoyed the summer.  It always goes by so fast! Some of my important goals for our children are building self-confidence, understanding responsibility, and developing a love of learning. We are going to have a fantastic year! In 2nd grade, these are our units of study: Frogs and Toads, Insects, Pioneer Times, Bears, Australia, and Rain Forests. All academics will be integrated within these units. The students will be strengthening their handwriting this year. In our program Math Expressions, we will be continuing to develop math skills. The students will use the programs Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math on classroom iPads to improve reading comprehension and math understanding. In Reader’s Workshop this year, students will have a variety of experiences such as shared, guided, and independent reading. I will be benchmarking the children in September to see what reading levels they are at in order to individualize instruction. In Writer’s Workshop we will write amazing stories and begin report writing. We even have a Celebrity of the Week! Each child will bring home a note when it is his/her turn. There are so many fun things to look forward to!

Responsibility and accountability are important for 2nd graders. Students will bring home agenda notebooks Monday through Thursday nights. Students will have reading, math, and spelling homework each of these nights. Parents, please remind your children to take their agendas out every night so homework will be completed on time. Students will have reading, math, and word work every night. The children should do homework for no more than 20 minutes a night. Anything more can be finished at school the next day. Also, please initial your children’s agendas each night when they show you their homework is finished. We can also use the agenda as a communication tool. Please write me notes if you wish. I will use it to write to you as well. Some parents like to write encouraging notes to their children in the agendas. Children will receive Friday Packets which will include the week’s work with a weekly student evaluation sheet attached to the top. Children can keep all of their work, but please sign and have your child return the evaluation sheet on Monday.

I’m looking forward to all of us working together! Our class homepage news will keep you informed on what we are up to in school. You can access this by going to our school website. Click on faculty and then you’ll find my name. Then click on homepage next to my name. It will be up and running in the next couple of weeks. Please send a box of crackers to share with the class for snack time. Like tissue, crackers will need to be replenished throughout the school year. I will let you know when we are getting low. Students may bring water bottles into the classroom. We will be having recess at 12:10, and lunch at 12:40. A couple of the attached sheets are for you to fill-out and return as soon as you can. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone before or after school. My extension is #6212. You can also e-mail me at
